National Day Speech by

H.E. Mr. Piamsak Milintachinda, Ambassador of Thailand to Hungary

on the occasion of

His Majesty the King’s 82nd Birthday Anniversary

3 December 2009

Sofitel Chain Bridge Hotel, Budapest, Hungary

Honoured guests, Excellencies, friends, colleagues - Good evening!

On behalf of the entire staff of the Royal Thai Embassy, I would like to thank every one of you for making time to be with us tonight.

On the 5th of December every year, the Thai people celebrate the auspicious occasion of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s Birthday Anniversary, which is our National Day.  This year marks His Majesty’s 82nd Birthday.

The whole nation celebrates because the Thai people love their King. They deeply appreciate the King’s devotion and hard work for their well-being. Since His Majesty’s Accession to the Throne on 9 June 1946, His Majesty has graciously initiated over 3,000 Royal projects that has benefited Thai people from all regions to a peaceful, sustainable, and secured life. His Majesty has sought to different ways in solving the nation’s problems; such as land and water resources, floods, environmental problems, traffic problems, issues of national energy, and more projects all aimed for the welfare and well-being of the Thai people. Although some problems may not be able to be processed immediately, His Majesty has imparted his wisdom and contributed many theories, which have led to practical solutions; such as the "new theory" and "economic sufficiency" which has proven to be very effective.

His Majesty is also renowned as a musician. The songs that you hear this evening are composed by His Majesty.

Dear guests,

I would like to take this opportunity to celebrate the strong relations between Thailand and Hungary. The close ties between the two countries are solid, successful, and expanding. So many of you here this evening have contributed in such important ways to advance our mutual goals; and I thank you very much for that.

Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to say good-bye to you all. My time has come to leave Hungary. I thank all our colleagues and friends, particularly my golf friends, for the warm friendship, generous support and sincere cooperation extended to my wife, my staff and me ever since I arrived in Hungary 2 years 8 months and 13 days ago. I can say that these are my happy days. My appreciation also goes to the Hungarian, both from government and business sectors, for the kind assistance and facilities in helping us perform our duties and organize various activities.

May I now propose a toast to the everlasting friendship between Thailand and Hungary, and to the good health, much happiness to President László Sólyom and to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.
