On 27 January 2022, Associate Professor Katalin Karikó, Ph.D., Hungarian biochemist and Senior Vice President of BioNTech RNA Pharmaceuticals, received the Prince Mahidol Award in the field of Medicine for the Year 2021 from Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand, Chairman, Board of Trustees and President of the Prince Mahidol Award Foundation, at the Chakri Throne Hall, Bangkok, Thailand.
The Prince Mahidol Award was established in 1992 and has been conferred annually to individuals or institutions in the field of medicine and public health for their outstanding performance and exemplary contributions to the advancement of the world’s medical and public health services. The Award was presented to Assoc. Prof. Karikó in recognition of her outstanding achievement in developing mRNA technology and its applications in medicine which led to the rapid availability of COVID-19 mRNA vaccine and saved millions of lives.
